Jake makes a point of detailing every drink he takes, because drinking is the only nightlife pleasure he really can enjoy, due to his wartime injury. Drinking is a form of escapism, of emotional anesthesia. Additionally, being a person concerned with details, such as enumerating things, distracts from having to deal with abstractions.

Jake introduces his story by talking about Robert rather than himself because Jake is defiantly against self-analysis. Consider the moment where he learns his close friend, Robert, has had an affair with Brett and has kept it secret from Jake. Upon learning of this, Jake shouts, "The lying bastard!" (107), but we get no narrative introspection, beyond this dialogue, whatsoever.
